The Dreamiest Winter Wonderland Wedding Venues in Ireland

Ireland boasts some of the most romantic wedding venues in the world. Dotted around the countryside are ancient castles and beautifully restored manors, many set on sprawling acres of stunning greens and forests, with lakes and rivers, private walkways and secret gardens all in their domain… No matter what the weather, these enchanting venues will provide the perfect setting for your Big Day, but when it comes to winter weddings, there are some especially ideal places to create your wonderland wedding.

From a beautiful tree-lined driveway to a mulled wine drinks reception by the fire, your winter wedding venue should have that something special that makes guests feel all warm and fuzzy, even if they couldn’t fit their thermals under their tight attire. Don’t be afraid of too much space when it comes to your venue, remember that most of these venues will have rich wooden interiors to give the sense of an intimate space, no matter what size the room is. Having your ceremony in your reception venue is a great idea for winter weddings in Ireland – often the less time guests have standing outdoors the better!

Of course you’re not just looking for something with a picture perfect exterior in the case that you’re blessed with a truly white wedding (depending how you feel about snow, of course) what you also should keep in mind is if you’ve found a wedding team that can handle the all-too-often erratic weather Ireland exhibits on an hourly basis. Ask your co-ordinator for pictures of winter weddings that have taken place before, or what they do if it snows!

Anne-Sophie & Conor on why they chose Castle Leslie Estate

We wanted a location that could hold at least 125 people but had an emphasis on the outdoors. We found a lot of locations held the wedding in a ballroom without windows, but we specifically wanted a summer wedding where we could enjoy a view of the outdoors. We fell in love with the landscape and the heritage of Castle Leslie Estate as soon as we saw it. The wedding team at Castle Leslie were excellent and helped us through every stage of the preparations for the venue.”

Ailbhe & Andrew on why they chose Clonabreany House

“It ticked all the boxes for us! We were looking for somewhere that was a little bit different and when we found Clonabreany House, it had everything and more! There is a beautiful reception room and bar, a fabulous marquee, accommodation on site and nearby for our guests not to mention a Sibin bar for the late night session. We also had the privilege of having Clonabreany House for the whole weekend so we had a BBQ the next day with a traditional Irish band and a great sing-song – it was our home away from home for the weekend and nobody wanted to leave!”

Ireland’s array of country houses and manors provide some of the most breathtakingly beautiful backdrops to unique and contemporary weddings in the country and are becoming more and more popular with couples each year. The appeal of a romantic country house wedding venue is obvious – most of these smaller venues are available for private hire and therefore offer an entirely exclusive service to couples who ‘own’ the house and grounds for the duration of their celebration – what’s not to love about that?!

Country Houses & Manors – Ireland’s Unique Wedding Venues

Like hotels, Irish country manors come in all shapes and sizes from those catering for large, lavish 5* festivities to the more quirky and alternative boutique style settings catering for small celebrations. Many country and manor house wedding venues can seem small at first yet can cater for surprising numbers with the use of specially built marquees or hidden orangeries which provide a magical and unique backdrop to wedding ceremonies.

Ballinacurra House – Where Privacy Makes the Difference

Guest capacity: 130 | Prices start from €40.00 | ballinacurra.com

The beautiful, award-winning Ballinacurra House in the gourmet capital of Ireland hosted their Premier Wedding Showcase, Menu Tasting and Cookery Demonstration on Saturday 21st February 2015. Nestled on the edge of the seaside town of Kinsale, this private country manor epitomises style and can be exclusively yours for the extent of your wedding celebrations.

Owners Des and Lisa McGahan have 25 years events experience and have pioneered the idea of the ‘Private Exclusive Wedding’, which is central to the venue’s success. It is this ‘exclusivity’ that makes the venue so special according to proprietor Des. “You’ve essentially got a mansion to yourselves so it is much more intimate,” says Des. “You can enjoy the seaside glamour of a totally private estate, offering bespoke food and beverage options, award winning design of rooms and a more personalised wedding offering – combined with the world class location of Kinsale which has so much to offer.” Couples also have the option of day after celebrations to look forward to where they can embrace the local offerings or have the run of the house and indulge in an unplugged session with their closest family and friends. It also boasts a Cuban Cocktail Bar, the first of its kind in Ireland – and the perfect spot to retire to for post-wedding recovery drinks and cigars.

The wedding showcase included menu tasting and a cookery demonstration with Head Chef, David Rice in the onsite Kinsale Gourmet Academy. David cooked for the Queen when she visited Ireland and has worked in Michelin Star restaurants most of his career. But the “unbelievable food” and custom-made menu option is just one of the attractions that draw couples to this bespoke wedding venue. Situated in the heart of the picturesque Kinsale, guests have a host of brilliant facilities and attractions on their doorstep to chose from should they decide to make a weekend out of the wedding celebrations, everything from scenic walks to thrilling water sports – and of course the opportunity to sample the array of delicious sweet and savoury goodies from this renowned foodie hotspot.

Kinsale_Town

But you don’t have to venture out to the local town if you don’t fancy it. The 40 acre estate has everything you need onsite for a fun and romantic weekend including an outdoor entertainment patio, croquet lawn, playground, picnic lawn and a stream and pond for those romantic strolls on its ground. Its magnificent south-facing walled gardens and surrounding woodlands offer stunning photo opportunities for wedding couples and guests alike.

ballinacurra-house-recpetion-space-interiors

Ballinacurra House is not just for couples that dream of hosting a summer soirée – winter weddings are just as appealing with open fires throughout the house adding to its charm, ideal for those that love the idea of a cosy mulled wine drinks reception by a roaring fire. And unlike other holiday towns, Kinsale has a large local population and promises a great buzz year-round so guests can explore whatever the season. Ballinacurra is also just 20 minutes from Cork International Airport and is close to the motorway so is easily accessible to those near and far.

ballinacurra

Ballinacurra is also becoming an increasingly popular option for international couples after an idyllic destination wedding in an old country manor with a stunning backdrop. “Approximately 60% of our weddings now come from overseas as the cost of weddings here are in some case 50% less than say New York, Paris or London,” says Des. “It’s not just the venue cost and food and beverage that is less but supplier costs are way below international rates. Recently I attended a wedding in New York and I was fascinated by the costs charged – you could fly all the guests to Ireland, pay for flights and accommodation for the same as the food and supplier costs. The quality here is more than comparable to international standards but not the cost.”

Wedding Venue Open Day – What to Expect

$
0
0

We know March has arrived here at WOL – the wedding venue open day season is now in full swing! If you’ve never attended one, we highly recommend it – so here’s what you can expect and why you should definitely go.

One peek at our Events page and you’ll see an abundance of open days held up and down the country. Why are there so many, you ask? Because they are, in a word, amazing. They are usually completely free of charge, beautifully planned and arranged and above all – useful. If your heart is set on a particular location, you may simply wish to visit just that one. However, if you’re still on the lookout, see as many as you can. It’ll make the final decision much easier. Expect to be impressed with them all, but you’ll most likely find you love one venue above all.

white-love-sign

Image from David & Mary’s real wedding by Melanie Hold

You’ve probably seen hundreds of photos from real weddings and swooned over the decorations. But absolutely nothing compares to seeing a dressed-up venue with your own eyes. This, by the way, is the reason why so many couples sneak into their reception room before the guests come in – to behold it in its full unspoiled and uncrowded glory. Expect to see a dressed up room, or portion of a room.

If you’re extremely well organised, you may find yourself seeing several venues during one weekend. It’s the perfect opportunity to gauge travel time for you and your guests (hint: the shorter the better). Note down all the travel times for driving, and don’t forget to consider those guests who may be arriving by taxi or public transportation. Also, check out the parking situation. Expect to be surprised how close/far it all seems.

Whether you’re going to one day or several, come prepared – bring a notepad, a camera and a companion, ideally your other half. You’ll want to remember as much of what you saw as possible, especially with multiple venue visits. Take pics of things you like best, jot down notes on everything that impresses you, and collect all the brochures and business cards they give you. Expect to see a lot of things you’ll want to remember, so feel free to get snap-happy.

Most venues have suppliers they work with very closely – florists, photographers, cake makers and transport companies. Chances are, you’ll meet some of them at the open day. There’s a very good reason to consider hiring them – not only will you have the benefit of chatting with them in person, they are also trustworthy. A venue wouldn’t risk its reputation on a supplier who lets the couples down. There are also cost benefits – often, their services may already be included in your package. Expect several suppliers to be there, ready to tell you all about their work and hopefully impress you.

lough-rynn-wedding

The venue’s wedding coordinator or events team will be there to show you around and answer your questions. We recommend downloading and printing our free wedding venue checklist and asking the questions you feel are most important. You can save the rest for later – if the venue is a serious contender, book an appointment with the coordinator where you’ll have ample time to ask everything else. Expect to meet the people who will be responsible for making your wedding unforgettable.

You may find yourself presented with cake samples, canapés, nibbles, champagne or wine – it varies from venue to venue. Expect to be wined, dined and be sure to ask some questions about food from special meals to buffet or hog roast options etc.

wedding-hotel-staff

Some places even hold fashion shows on the open day – and who doesn’t like looking at gorgeous dresses? If there’s one taking place, make sure to ask what time and arrive well ahead – the seating is usually limited. This is perfect if you haven’t found a wedding dress yet, and you can be sure the bridal store owner will be there too. Expect to be awfully impressed and maybe even find ‘the one’.

There’s no better time for a romantic getaway than springtime, and many venues with accommodations offer special rates for couples who wish to stay overnight on that very weekend. It may be your chance to experience a luxurious break at a discounted price! Call your chosen venues beforehand and ask if they offer this option.

fota-island-resort-wedding

Image from Ailish & Vinny’s real wedding at Fota Island Resort by Insight Photography

Finally, it comes to this – most couples have a budget to consider and sometimes what stands between them and their dream location is just that… the price. However, many venues offer specially priced packages for the open day only, which is why we suggest you come to the open day with your other half. The terms and conditions vary, so make sure to take some time to ponder your options and ask about the cancellation policy, just in case. Expect to be amazed by an incredible deal.

In short – what can you expect from a wedding open day? Loads of fun, tons of inspiration… and being that much closer to choosing the perfect place for your wedding day.

Real Brides Reveal: Why we chose our Wedding Venue

$

Choosing a wedding venue can either be one of the easiest or most difficult aspects of planning a wedding. With mountains of recommendations and reviews being thrown at you from every angle, it’s easy to feel a little bit overwhelmed at the frankly incredible range of brilliant and beautiful wedding venues there are dotted around our little country.

So what actually makes a couple choose one wedding venue over another? Is it the art of compromise where one juggles the heavy, ill-formed balls of budget, location, availability and capacity or should one plum for that one single outstanding feature? Most often it’s none of these, but the vaguest of reasons, the elusive ‘I just got a good feeling about that place’. Find out how 10 of our real wedding couples came to commit to the setting for their special day below.

Vintage: Redefined – Deirdre & John’s Elegant Riverside Wedding

The venue:  Riverside Park Hotel, Wexford | The couple: Deirdre Shannon & John Lynch
Wedding Date: 16th March 2015 | Photographer: Martina California

We chose the Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy. We had a number of options to choose from within Wexford. As we were getting married in March, we knew that our guests wouldn’t be outdoors very much as it would be too cold. Therefore, the Riverside was perfect. It has a lovely reception area for the guests as they enter. The Riverside offer great packages and above all, they are noted for serving really good food. The hotel has set itself up as mainly a wedding hotel and the whole day ran really smoothly with so much of this being down to both the staff and the wedding coordinator.”

“We chose Tulfarris Hotel & Golf Resort firstly because we fell in love with the location – on the peninsula jutting out in the lakes of Blessington – and secondly because of the amazing team of coordinators. From our first meeting, Lillian Mahon, Honora Carberry and Derrick the Duty Manger went above and beyond for us and all of our guests.”

Wedding date: 29th May 2015 | Photographer: Couple Photography

“We explored getting married in Ireland or in Chamonix, France as Chamonix is a place we hold many happy memories of. Once we made a decision not to marry in France however, the Village at Lyons was the only choice for us. It was the first and only venue we went to see in Ireland as we loved the setting, the décor, the waterfall outside the window of the dining room and the size of the venue was perfect for us.”

“Having the wedding at home allowed us the freedom to design our perfect day. We welcomed family and friends in to Kian’s garden, which was lovingly decorated. We had our hearts set on a garden party. We had rustic bar tables and signs made from chopped wood from the garden, tipi tents from Magnakata, picnic benches and haybales, and outdoor games to entertain the guests! Luckily we had the weather for ice cream, cocktails and outdoor games!”

It’s a beautiful venue that has the perfect layout for a wedding. We thought the function room was ideal and we liked the way the drawing room and other bar were available for any guests who didn’t feel like dancing. We had looked for a venue within one hour of Dublin and it was the first venue we saw and our favourite!”
