All couples are different, but they all have one thing in common – they want a wedding venue that’s so ‘them’. If you’re after something a little bit different for your Big Day, then this list of Irish wedding venues will definitely have you jumping and clicking your heels.

Durhamstown Castle, Meath

Located in Bohermeen in Co. Meath, Durhamstown Castle combines civil ceremonies, wedding receptions and accommodation all under one roof. Choose the castle itself which is full of charm and eclectic finds, or if you’re after a unique space for your celebrations, move into the Great Barn, which easily accommodates up to 150 guests. The beamed interior is perfect for all kinds of hanging decorations and has a real rustic feel, thanks to a gorgeous combination of wood and stone.

Martinstown House, Kildare

If you’d like to get a real feeling that your wedding is arranged by family with no attention spared, then Martinstown House will give you exactly that. The Booth family has been doing weddings for decades, everything from chic intimate parties to laid back affairs in their marquee. Bursting with character, charming features and a wonderful homely feel, they also have their very own VW campervan you can use. Remember to ask about their signature midnight feast, served at just the right time to keep the party going.

The Three Towers at Slieve Aughty Centre, Galway

If you’re after an exclusive, alternative venue with a gorgeous rural setting, the Slieve Aughty Centre will tick all your boxes! The Three Towers at Slieve Aughty Centre in Galway specialise in eco-weddings that are relaxed, personal and always unique. With more than 30 acres of gardens, fields, and 2,000 acres of Coillte forest, it’s the perfect place to wander for magical wedding photos. You can choose to take full advantage of the idyllic grounds and say ‘I Do’ outdoors or avail of the rustic setting indoors, followed by a 3-course organic meal in the comfort of The Three Towers Eco House and Organic Kitchen for 50-80 guests.

Mount Druid, Westmeath

irish wedding venues

Trees as far as the eye can see, surrounding a venue that’s unlike anything else in Ireland. You’re at Mount Druid, and if you think romance and fun simply must go together, this is where you’ll get extra oomph out of both. A combination of vintage chic and antique decor is perfect for your wedding, blending in with your own decorations in the most delightful way. A choice of five menus (including a full vegan option) will have you spoiled for choice.

Kippure Estate, Wicklow

irish wedding venues

Privately set on 240 acres of spectacular landscape, Kippure Estate is perfect for couples after a romantic, unspoilt location for their wedding celebrations (they have a whole weekend option too because sometimes it just feels like one day isn’t enough to really let your hair down and celebrate). You can say ‘I Do’ indoors or avail of the incredible scenery as a magical backdrop for your ceremony. For the reception, a marquee can be set up on the grounds that can host up to 200 guests for a night of fun and dancing.

Durty Nelly’s, Co. Clare

There’s always something fun going on at Durty Nelly’s in Co. Clare. Could your wedding be next? It has oodles of charm to offer, and three locations for your wedding: the Loft, the Oyster Restaurant, and the assorted bars. Food is especially important in any wedding, and at Durty Nelly’s, it’s cooked to perfection. The classic dark wood interiors are cosy and inviting all year round, and the funnest setting for pub-style party you’ve ever seen.

Medley, Dublin

irish wedding venues

A remarkable wedding deserves a landmark venue – Medley. Located in the famous Old Irish Times Building on Fleet Street in Dublin, this is a chic setting for your wedding. It’s perfect for modern city-loving couples who still want a touch of charm and grandeur. The interior composed of an upstairs and downstairs area just begs for an abundance of electrifying decor. Here, you can have a wedding all of Dublin wishes they were invited to.

Sol y Sombra, Co. Kerry

irish wedding venues

If you can’t have a wedding in Spain, then have the next best thing – a tapas party at Sol y Sombra in Co. Kerry. Of course, they can do as traditional Irish as you like, but their specialty is informal celebrations featuring gourmet tapas buffet, incredible wines and an atmosphere that will keep everyone laughing and dancing. This is all set in a former church building with stained glass windows and antique furniture. Yes, it will be a wedding nobody will forget.

Ballybeg House, Wicklow

irish wedding venues

A wedding at Ballybeg House in Co. Wicklow is more than a party, it’s an Adventure with a capital A. If you remember the delightful childhood feeling of discovering and exploring new places, you can now re-create that thrill for your guests by booking your wedding here. Aside from the house, grounds and the ceremony room, there’s a spectacular Victorian marquee for your reception, plus a private shebeen, a dairy, and coming soon – traditional Irish Crannógs. Invite up to 170 lucky guests and they’ll never stop talking about it.

Liss Ard Estate, Cork

A truly exclusive wedding must have three things: privacy, peace and tranquility. You get them all at Liss Ard Estate, plus amazing history to boot and landscapes you’ll never forget, including a breathtaking 50-acre lake and their contemporary Irish Sky Garden. This elegant Georgian country house can accommodate up to 100 guests in their drawing rooms and restaurant but they’re also well used to throwing fabulous marquee celebrations for larger groups where couples can put their own stamp on their day.

St Peter’s Cork

irish wedding venues

There’s a perfect venue for every couple who loves a combination of culture, heritage and history – St Peter’s Cork. Your guests will think they are entering an old church. Indeed, it used to be a religious venue, with parts of the building dating back to the 12th century. But inside, it’s all about the contrast between the old and the new… sleek modern spaces with sun streaming through medieval windows. It’s a wow anywhere you look. There’s also a secret courtyard garden and a mezzanine gallery for a little extra culture fix.

Lisa Cannon Visits weddingsonline Venue of the Year – the Luxurious Castlemartyr Resort in Cork

Hello everyone! It’s an absolute pleasure to be back with weddingsonline writing about my favourite topic! I’ve been very lucky to have the thoroughly enjoyable job of travelling to some of the all important winners of this year’s prestigious weddingsonline awards, giving you an insight and background in to the hotels, meeting the magic makers for your big day and finding out what it means to win such an amazing award as this.

As we all know the weddingsonline awards are like the Oscars to the Wedding Industry and I was there on the night handing out the gongs, thrilled to see so many familiar faces from the industry and also to make some new friends! One thing is for sure, the standard in this country for weddings is second to none so when I was given the task to sample some of the delights of Ireland’s top venues… well I couldn’t resist!

Firstly, I travelled to Cork to the Stunning 5 star Castlemartyr Resort which has hosted the likes of Hollywood and Rock Royalty; Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen and Bill Clinton no less and to my mind is one of the most exciting venues in Ireland as it really does have it all from Amenities, to Ambiance to an A-list Team. It’s no wonder it won the top prize and I have to say, having stayed here once before, it has everything a wedding venue needs and more. Last weekend for Daffodil Day, a very poignant day for me, I took myself and my mother’s friend Susan who is thankfully cancer free for the past 2 years for a real treat which had me grinning from ear to ear.

When we arrived I glided on to the gravel on to the majestic driveway that I had forgotten was so expansive, vast and more importantly, impressive. The grounds and the beautiful lake plus the horses greet you on arrival. There is a certain sense of calm about the hotel and needless to say the 5 stars shows in every facet of this incredible building. Castlemartyr Resort has been very lucky this year in terms of its awards; not only was it named ‘Overall Venue of the Year’ but it also took home the prestigious ‘Munster Venue of the Year’ as well at this year’s weddingsonline Awards. I sat down with Sian James, Events Manager at Castlemartyr who has been with the hotel for 10 years helping to plan and organise weddings for brides and grooms-to-be. Sian has a wonderful team in both Jackie and Danielle who also help with the organisation of the weddings. So how did the A-team feel after they won the big award on the night?

It really is a huge honour, there was so much stiff competition but we didnt have any huge expectation and when we won for Muster Venue we were absolutely thrilled, we were only getting over that high when we won overall venue we were so delighted. It’s a huge effort here from all the team and certainly having won the award our enquiries are higher and it’s really put us on the map!

I’m sure having won the award the phones have been hopping Sian?

Yes, there has been a lot of interest and past couples are going on our Facebook page and saying well done and writing more reviews for us, everyone is really joining in with our celebrations.

Castlemartyr has so many 5 star amenities and none more so than the Spa, the indoor Pool and everything in between. Having spent some time at the pool I was bowled over by how creatively it’s been designed so that outside meets inside and how peaceful and calm one feels while enjoying the trees and flowers outside while you swim. The Spa is second to none and the team are so experienced when it comes to the health and wellness department. You can even pre-honeymoon here and according to Sian, couples tend to stay a few days before and after the wedding.

Most of our couples stay for 3 days or more, we have pre-wedding dinners, rehearsals dinners we have lots of options- they feel like they can make it into a mini-break and we really are a great destination wedding venue also for those coming from abroad.

What makes Castlemartyr so special aside from the glorious surroundings?

So we have 103 rooms in total in the hotel and we have 10 rooms in the manor house, that’s where our spectacular bridal suites are, we have lots of options for any budget, we have Franchini’s, our informal Italian restaurant which is popular before the wedding where you can have BBQs and Pizzas… we also have The Pod, our Gold Clubhouse, it’s very modern and has a very different feel so nobody gets cabin fever. We have a manor house that dates back to the 18th century which has a lovely feel and we are very fortunate to be situated on a 220 acre estate.

Indeed, the 5 star luxurious Castlemartyr Resort is set on incredibly large grounds featuring its own Castle ruins, lake and surrounding woodlands offering the perfect backdrop for your special day. Situated only 20 minutes from Cork City, you can enjoy all the culinary delights from the award-winning team… and what about the all important food?

Our executive chef Kevin Burke has been with us a number of years and he works very much with seasonal products, local suppliers and he perfects what he does. Our gourmet menu is a 5 course menu and it’s quite a dining experience. He also looks after our fabulous afternoon teas and wedding menus. The great thing about us is you can literally do any type of wedding.

Castlemartyr Resort are delighted to cater for humanist, civil and outdoor ceremonies and offer a number of location options, including their stunning 13th Century castle backdrop, which will take your breath away, but according to Sian you can make the most of the venue:

You can really put your own personality and stamp on the venue, you literally can do any style of wedding you want. We have seen couples put rubber ducks in the fountain, weve seen vintage themes, old glamour themes, country living, anything works… the ballroom is spectacular in itself with very neutral colours so you can do whatever you choose to do. We had a couple from Mexico who had a flight theme going for the big day and our guest relations manger dressed up as a pilot! It was fantastic so as you can see, we love to take it a step further.

It’s easy to see that the team at Castlemartyr are more than happy to help you with your theme and help you achieve your dream. They are very fortunate also that couples keep coming back to visit after they’re married. Sian feels that “it’s such a pleasure to work with couples and see their big day come to fruition here. We had some unusual weddings such as an Alice in Wonderland themed day and this particular couple are coming back for their child’s christening. It really is very special

But my final question HAD to be about the awards… Where are they both and what has it done for the morale of the staff and guests?

The Awards are in a glass cabinet in the lobby in prime position, we are very proud of them both, but we are very excited as we will have a billboard outside the hotel to showcase that we have won the best wedding venue of the year also. It means a lot to past couples and future couples, the staff and management here too and it creates a buzz around the hotel as well!

So there you have it, a worthy winner and an incredible triumph for the hotel. I am delighted that Sian and all the wedding team are thrilled with their win and I hope it encourages people to go and visit the resort and experience a visit to one of the nicest hotels here in Ireland.

Lisa Cannon Visits weddingsonline Waterside Venue of the Year – the Gorgeous Garryvoe Hotel in Cork

Hi again everyone again!… So as you know I’ve been taking the time to check out some of the wonderful winners from this year’s prestigious weddingsonline awards and what a job it’s been. I feel extremely lucky to be able to get a whistle-stop tour of some of the best award-winning hotels Ireland has to offer and for me it’s getting to discover some of the most beautiful parts of the country! Garryvoe Hotel in Co. Cork is one which I was lucky to have had the pleasure to have stepped inside. Little do you know when you come around the corner that you meet the most stunning views of Ballycotton Bay. It really is breathtaking!

Stephen Belton, the MD of the hotel was kind of enough to show me around this stunning hotel which has been in operation since the early 1900s…

Nobody would think to look at the Garryvoe Hotel that it is almost 118 years old! Since the early 1900s, streams of Irish people swarmed the Ballycotton Beach and dipped into the small local hotel afterwards for some afternoon tea and warm scones. Now, more than a century on the hotel still welcomes the beach-goers for a warm scone but this time with a swish cool 20th century latte and a twinkling smile. Garryvoe has come a long way and won Waterside Wedding Venue of the Year at the weddingsonline awards recently. I was there to chat to Stephen Belton about how it’s changed in those 100 years and what a wedding at Garryvoe means to the staff and most importantly the bride and groom!

In the year 2000 when I took over The Garryvoe; it was a 17 bedroom, 2 star hotel. Now, in 2018 it has 85 rooms, is a 4 star hotel with four ballrooms, a health club, a sauna, a hot tub, four conference rooms employing 150 people.

So when you say it like that, you can really see how the hotel has evolved and come to play a very important role in the local area and to its loyal customers and residents. For me, on arrival the hotel is like an old steed manor but it’s only when you go through the doors that you really see its uniqueness which is all carved out in the stunning interiors! It really is a magical hotel and one that you have to put on your ocean-side bucket list! Aside from being an aesthetically beautiful hotel with a lounge you could stay in for days, the most important piece of the puzzle Garryvoe brings to the table for brides and grooms is its charm.

We look after everything right down to the last detail… we are the wedding coordinators – there is Aiden our GM, and Brenda and Ben so about four of us are involved in the weddings. We are the point of contact all throughout your big day and the only day Im not here is a Sunday! The relationship between the bride and groom and Garryvoe Hotel is a strong unique bond and it’s close because we are here and will look after you 100%.

This year it was an incredible year to win as there was such stiff competition especially when it comes to Munster, your title now reads Waterside Wedding Venue of the Year 2018… so how has it made you feel Stephen?

It’s been incredible for not only the staff and the hotel but for business too. Since 2016 weve won the Best Hotel in Munster for 3 years, Wedding Coordinators two years ago for Andre and Ben and overall for Ireland in 2016… it’s been brilliant!

However for the hotel there is of course the additional pressure and pressure to perform which on a wedding day is paramount! What makes Garryvoe stand out in that department?

It’s recognising that closeness with the wedding party and of course the couple, every hotel says you have to build a relationship with the bride and groom, that is the key and we do that exceptionally well here. We always deliver and after all these years, you are in safe hands. We know what we are doing, we help you build your dream day so without a doubt youll have confidence in us.

Aside from the beautiful views of Ballycotton Bay, you can’t mention the Garryvoe Hotel without mentioning its interiors. It oozes charm and beauty and has cool blasts of colour and energy. It’s like a slice of happiness when you walk through the front door, so how did this eclectic taste for colour and style in a boutique hotel from the 1900s get to be so popular?

I always say we are on a Mission from God (Blues Brothers). We try to combine style and contemporary interiors. Style for any bride is important and we want to surprise people always. We teamed up with the very brilliant Douglas Wallace in Dublin, and explained where we wanted to see the interiors going and they took it all onboard and did what you see today.

But my burning question was… where did the quirky orange love seats and dresden blue walls with oak tables and ornate chandeliers come from? What was Stephen’s inspiration to create such a funky look in the hotel?

The inspiration comes from me looking at London and New York hotels on the internet and in person. My wife says you’re not in London and New York, you’re in East Cork so youve to keep your feet on the ground! I do agree but that doesn’t mean you cant take inspiration from anywhere else

I couldn’t agree more so, voilà, Garryvoe is born out of inspiration and mood boards of the Soho House Hotels across the Globe. Yet one thing I did notice amongst all the coolness and quirkiness is the ballroom which is very traditional, it sets the palette standard for any bride.

Yes the ballroom is designed around a wedding so the high ceilings and the chandeliers – all 9 of them – add sparkle to the room. When a couple walks into the room they have to get a Whoa!! We have a lot of weddings a year, we are doing two or three a week so it is important that each wedding is very special and looked after very well and the ballroom caters for that in the fact it’s very traditional.

So what makes an intimate wedding at Garryvoe so special?

We are accessible, very grounded and down to earth and even though we are friendly and have great standards, we are very focused on what we want to do for the bride and groom. I help in the kitchen and the staff smothers them in love. I always say that if you and your team are not switched on it comes across, the bride and groom may not say it but they will feel it so everyone is en pointe!

And finally, one of the biggest selling points of the hotel is its unique Bridal Suite, a two storey suite directly overlooking Ballycotton Bay which is… WAIT for it; 1,2,00 sq feet… this, according to Stephen is perhaps one of the biggest Bridal Suites in the country!

Yes, it has a ground floor bedroom, a sauna, a double jacuzzi and big shower. The upstairs has a balcony that opens onto Ballycotton Bay… it might be one of the biggest Bridal Suites in Munster, nobody has measured anybody else’s but it just might be!

I think having had a quick peek it most certainly is – FABULOUS!

Congratulations to Garryvoe Hotel on their weddingsonline award for Waterside Wedding Venue of the Year 2018, it truly is a special place and one I think any bride and groom should consider for a very homely, friendly, elegant and fun place to celebrate.

Lisa Cannon Visits weddingsonline Hotel Venue of the Year Leinster – the Charming Clanard Court Hotel

$

Hello everyone, I’m so thrilled to be racing around the countryside sampling the delights of all your winners from the weddingsonline awards… it’s been brilliant so far and I’m so impressed with all the stunning wedding venues we have unique to our beautiful country. It’s impressive to see the difference in styles and weddings that are held in each venue; but for me, the top of the cherry is how much every hotel and country estate takes pride in their weddings and understands that giving the bride and groom the attention they need and being patient is key to making any big day a success. I’m so impressed also with the amount of heart and love that is poured into making each wedding day memorable and that’s just the staff! To my mind, it’s only from talking to the men and women BEHIND the doors of your venues that you get to understand the level of passion and commitment they invest in you to make your day shine.

This time I kept it closer to my home with a stunning property in Kildare; the Clanard Court Hotel who won Hotel Venue of the Year in Leinster!

On arrival I was greeted by Claire Dunne (Wedding Co-ordinator) and Mary Fennin-Byrne (Owner and MD) who alongside their colleague Anna showed me around the hotel. I had never been to the Clanard Court before and I have to say first impressions last as I fell in love instantly. It’s a hotel that oozes country chic and cosy perfectly. I wanted to bed down for the night. There would have been no moving me – with a massage, afternoon tea and a glass of Prosecco, I would never have left! Aside from the stunning gardens and sumptuous rooms, the atmosphere is so welcoming, it’s no wonder everyone feels at home here.

Firstly I couldn’t go a step further without congratulating them on their super win of ‘Hotel Venue of the Year Leinster’ – I mean, that’s a feat in itself! So, how did owner Mary Fennin-Byrne feel about scooping the coveted prize on the night of the weddingsonline awards?

“We were absolutely flabbergasted, delighted! We had gone up to the awards with no expectations…obviously we would have loved to have won it, we put a lot of work and effort into it but when our name was called out we were overawed!”

What does it mean for a small family run business such as this to win this award; aside from the local notoriety, does it mean more confidence in what you do?

“For us it’s a recognition of the hard work we have put in, it’s that trophy we’ve been chasing for the last 13 years and when we finally got it, we felt we were doing something right! We are constantly upgrading and reinventing ourselves, adding new bits and pieces to the hotel so when it’s noticed by the professionals behind the scenes, it really is great!”

What struck me about the humble approach to winning by Mary and her team was also the fact that this is a very hands on hotel. Mary and her father tend to the gardens and Mary loves interiors which is very much a part of the fabric of Clanard Court. On inspection the rooms are beautifully decorated and tastefully achieved through pops of bright colours that really cheer you up and make you feel like not only would your time here be fun and restful, but that you’d enjoy going to bed at night in either your turquoise room, Hampton’s blue room or even your more daring black and green room complete with black chandeliers.

“I’m inspired by Pinterest, I see things and I follow them. I pin it and see if I can enhance it and then I google and chase the look and don’t stop until I get the look. I think you really need to capture the wow factor when you walk into any bedroom and you do that by colour, quirky features and the colours for me need to all tie in.’

The Bridal Suite is very unusual, it has scatterings of green and pinks and is very friendly, cosy and uniquely designed with a large four poster bed and an amazing ornate marble fireplace. I can see why couples flock to stay in these unique and stunningly designed rooms. As mentioned the Clanard Court Hotel is a family country chic hotel and this is reflected in its ballroom complete with vintage chandeliers and room decor. This beautiful ballroom has a feature that no money can buy… the garden.

The gardens would make Diarmuid Gavin proud and come complete with preened rose bushes, a stunning centrepiece Weeping Willow Tree and little love seat at the back. The grass is lush and green and I could see many brides vying for an outdoor wedding if the weather holds, which was the case last weekend on the hottest day of the year! Simply stunning.

“Weather dependent, we work with every bride and groom, it can be inside or outside on the day and we just need an hour’s notice if the sun is shining. We are always prepared to be inside over-looking the gardens. Everything outside is looked after by my Dad who is 86 years old! The garden is his passion, he’s usually out pottering, nursing, planting bulbs and making the garden burst with colour all year round. It gets a lot of life in it and a lot of TLC too.”

As you can see, this is essentially a family run hotel with a strong sense of togetherness which stands out a mile, but aside from the family side of things, what makes the Canard Court Hotel stand out from the crowd?

“Our people for sure; we have 80 staff in the hotel and we are like one big happy family, a wedding day is made up of teams from the porters, floor staff, sales office, wedding co-ordinator, management to housekeeping and kitchen and if they’re not all going in the same direction, we will drop the ball. We all have one goal which is to look after people. We are all about making people feel at home, everyone sings off that, it’s the way we feel, it’s just what happens and we don’t have to work on it.”

I also caught up with wedding co-ordinator extraordinare Claire Dunne who talked me through the steps that she does to ensure that your day goes off without a hitch…

“The most important thing here is tailoring the day to meet the needs of the couple. I always embrace the uniqueness with each individual. There are no two couples alike so no two weddings are the same and we cater for that.”

But I had to ask… what was the most unusual request Claire’s ever had?

“I suppose the bride and groom wanting a pint of milk as their welcome drink complete with milk urns! It was very much a country style wedding, they wanted a harvest theme also as they were from a farming background. People also love getting the photos with the alpacas up on the hill outside the venue, their job is to keep the grass down and when guests spot them they love getting photos with them, the horses, the sheep etc… so they are a big attraction.”

But aside from the farm animals I think it’s the dedication and energy that the staff at Clanard Court put into the weddings that reaps the rewards:

“We had an Indian wedding one New Year’s Eve which was fantastic. The girl was a local girl and was Indian. It was very much a multicultural wedding and the couple changed into their traditional costume and performed an Indian dance after dinner which really lifted the roof off… the atmosphere that night was electric and we did everything we possibly could to help their dreams come true.”

However, the final words from the winning hotel came from the MD herself Mary Fennin-Byrne who stated why Clanard Court is a loved hotel around the country and it’s for very good reason…

“If you’re a guest in the hotel, you’re a guest in our own home, we don’t have to work on it, the staff are loyal, they love what they do and do it with pride. I think if you look back on our ratings on Tripadvisor and other online sites, it’s always about the people and we make that emotional connection… you can have nice touches and nice decor etc. but if you don’t have heart, you have nothing.”

Hear Hear Mary, I couldn’t have said it better myself! Congratulations!

Lisa Cannon Visits weddingsonline Exclusive Venue of the Year – the Romantic Rathsallagh House

Hello everyone, this week on my blog you are in for a real treat. As you may or may not know I am roaming our beautiful countryside with the hard task of meeting the amazing people behind the weddings venues you know and love. Not just to pop in admire and ogle but more importantly to congratulate them on their weddingsonline award win and delve into the reason why they won the award and what it means to them. So many are over the moon to have won but are humbled to keep going to better create, reinvent and make YOUR wedding the best it can be.

I was delighted this week to venture down Dunlavin way to Co. Wicklow but this time to a property I have heard non stop about from fellow brides. Many say it’s beautiful, many say it’s breathtaking, many say it’s cosy but for me when I drove up the vintage gates and onto the gravel with the golf course on either side, I knew it felt like home. If only my home LOOKED like that but it is my aspirational home, laced with cascading ivy, lush gardens and character to boot. Tucked away behind the incredible landscape of vast greenery is the stunning Rathsallagh House and boy was it a marvellous sight!

Rathsallagh to my mind as mentioned is one of the VERY few wedding venues I’ve neither stayed in nor had the pleasure of attending a wedding at. I was struck by how much character the face of the building has; it’s so pretty and encapsulating that you forget it’s a highly functioning exclusive venue with over 70 staff. I thought on first reflection that it was a weekend retreat too where you could book special birthdays and Christmas’ but I was wrong- only a few days or a weekend a year does it open to us mere mortals so you better be quick… I luckily got my spoke in and booked in for next January… okay so only another 9 months to wait but it’s worth it!

Meeting Joe O’Flynn Proprietor and Manager is a fun-filled experience, dapper and dashing, Joe is full of stories and life… my kind of person who talks about the excitement of having your wedding here, a mix between Formula 1 Eddie Jordan and old gentry. This place has it in spades, it’s stunning, country, chic, unique, classy, cosy and individual… and as Joe would say you can hire it out for the few days and have the craic… again my kind of person!

So in catching up with Joe on the sofa at Rathsallagh beside the roaring fire, I wanted to know after ALL the wins over the years (there has been too many to name), why was this one, the weddingsonline award for ‘Exclusive Venue of the Year’ so special?

“ It was amazing… we’ve always been runner up and we’re like ‘come on, we’ll do it, we’ll do it’… and we finally got it and it was just thrilling! My heart nearly came out of my mouth the night when they announced it but it’s for the team here, it’s THEIR award!”

What has the weddingsonline award done for you, your business and the team spirit here at Rathsallagh?

“It’s done amazing things… the enquires have gone through the roof, sure we could hardly keep up with them so it’s been brilliant. We’ve another very busy 2018, we’re nearly fully booked for 2019 but come on… I still have some dates!! Haha… but no it’s really flying and we are great thank God!”

Joe is a true businessman and knows that Rathsallagh is something special. For me it may be a top class wedding venue but it’s the history of the property and that of his family who bought it in the late 70s and transformed it to what it is now that is just as important. The back story of the house is just as interesting to those who marry here as the legendary weddings they produce and Joe kindly filled me in.

“When we came here in 1978, we were dairy farmers from Cork and butchers in Cork city. My father found Rathsallagh and then the recession hit hard in the 80s so my mother started doing Farmhouse B&B. In and around 1984/85, we started in the hospitality industry and we’ve been thriving ever since.”

Rathsallagh is coming into its 40th year as a family run business and it’s one of those venues which has repeat business and it’s passed down from family to family and generation to generation.

“We’re here so long, we’ve had a daughter getting married whose mother was a Rathsallagh bride. I’ve also got a gentleman whose four daughters have been married here… he tells me he has shares now!”

We wouldn’t doubt it, but what are the team behind the magic like, how and who makes them work like clockwork?

“We have a LONG history of doing weddings here and we’ve a superb team. Catherine Lawlor has been here since day one for example; 30 years and Maeve is here 28 years so the combined wedding experience for the wedding co-ordinators here is 80 years! They don’t like me to say that but for me that’s continuity and right through recessions, hard times and good times we are still here and we are still delivering and doing what we love to do!”

Joe’s parents now in their 70s and 80s are very much on par with running the show and as we know already the team have over 30 plus years experience, so what makes a wedding here unique? Is it the exclusivity or the personal touch or is it the fact that they are experts after all their years and you’re in very safe hands?

“There are an awful lot of venues in Ireland that call themselves ‘exclusive use’ but they might have some other business such as a shop or restaurant, something else going on in the property… we don’t. So when that couple walks in the door, our entire focus for the day, two days or three days is them. Any last minute changes can be done for example; say they are having an onsite civil ceremony in the beautiful walled garden beside the apple blossom tree and suddenly a cloud comes over and it doesn’t look good, we can instantaneously move the wedding inside without a blip or hardly anybody noticing. That’s all because of our focus and dedication to that couple on the day because there is nothing else here, only them and we are only there for them too.”

Sounds wonderful, close personal attention – that’s what every bride and groom needs and wants but my little findings after a recce around the property was that of a new church on the site grounds. This is Joe’s latest addition and it’s genius.

“On site civil ceremonies have been rising year on year and have become more and more popular particularly around Easter time where you can’t get married in a church in Ireland so we discovered that a lot of couples don’t want to compromise. We have a dedicated space now (our church or granary) and we can seat 250 people there- it’s magnificent!”

But Joe’s genius ideas extend to us ladies, how did he come up with the exclusive boudoir off the dance floor? THIS I loved and had never seen before but there is method behind his madness as he explains…

“If you go to a wedding in a big hotel, keeping everyone together can be difficult and particularly the ladies, I’ve found that many women seem to find the furthest bathroom away and convene there spending hours away from the party. So…. I put a boudoir right there beside the wedding pavilion for ladies so you can be found! It has everything you need, mirrored walls, seating area, lotions and potions. It means people aren’t split and you’re all kept together.”

One thing that struck me aside from the stunning bedrooms and old country feel was how many rooms there were! I counted 39 in the main house and 6 in the two gate lodges but according to Joe there are over 800 B&B’s too that you can share with your guests if you have a large wedding. Rathsallagh can actually cater for the small weddings of 40 right up to 250. However, although I couldn’t disclose ANY celebrities who have had their wedding there, let’s just say they are the crème de la crème of both the music industry and indeed Hollywood too… you are walking with the A-list when you book… but it also is so endearing it feels like home.

“We like to be relaxed and treat everyone the same. But yes people aspire to have their weddings here and we’ve had many high end ones, during the Derby times we had to bring in Irish helicopters with their own air traffic control because there could be anywhere from 5 or 6 aircrafts coming and going at the same time to the races. It’s lovely to aspire to but we will work with everyone’s budget from 50 cents to 50 million!”

Finally, after chatting non stop to Joe, I found out that Rathsallagh House is going to have a face-lift in the coming months so anyone that knows and loves the property are in for a treat. The ‘old lady’ as Joe calls her is going to have a fresh coat of paint and will when it’s complete according to Joe, look ‘brilliant!’

I don’t doubt it and with his rock solid team and his effervescent enthusiasm I’m convinced this bit of lipstick and highlighter is going to make her better than ever for years to come!

Congratulations on your win and we look forward to the next 40 years of Rathsallagh!

Paula & James at Mount Druid, Co. Westmeath

“We heard about the venue through a friend. We had been in a lot of venues and we just didn’t seem to find the one that suited what we wanted. Until we found Mount Druid. I fell in love with it immediately and my husband loved it too. It was just so quirky and nothing I had ever seen before. We also love festivals and wanted something so laid back too. Plus everything was onsite.”

Donal & Kerry at Kinnitty Castle, Co. Offaly

“As we both live abroad it was important to have both of our families and loved ones feel at home so it was always going to be in Ireland. We miss Ireland so much so the venue had to encompass everything that resembles Ireland. Great food, drink, scenery and quaint villages. Kinnitty Castle was perfect. The surrounding grounds are beautiful, the hospitality and food is always exceptional. And of course it’s a castle so I got my Disney theme ticked off there!. We were lucky to have the whole castle booked out to ourselves for the weekend.”

Lisa & Alan at Dunboyne Castle, Co. Meath

“Alan chose our venue after doing some research online. I always said I wanted to walk into a hotel and feel the WOW factor. As soon as we drove into Dunboyne Castle, I knew we’d found our venue. The driveway is very impressive. The old house is fab and the garden areas are magic for photos. And the Tara Suite where we had our wedding was the perfect size and layout. The room catered perfectly for our 169 guests.  The dance floor wasn’t disturbed as the room fitted all tables with plenty of room. The hotel has a spa and swimming pool which we knew we would use the day after the wedding to chill out.”

Mairéad and Jonathan at Palmerstown House Estate, Kildare

“Its pure elegance from the beautiful Manor House and the surrounding gardens. We also knew there would be very little for us to do as the venue speaks for itself. We didn’t want a large wedding and the numbers involved meant we could have the entire day in the Manor house. People were able to enjoy the outside, because we had great weather. But we knew the drawing rooms would make a perfect reception area even if it had rained.”

Emma & Tommy at Lyrath Estate, Co. Kilkenny

“We initially looked passed The Lyrath as it was literally too close to home being on our doorstep, but in the end we just couldn’t find where that came close by comparison. We looked farther afield for something a little different but on all levels kept coming back to Kilkenny and to The Lyrath.

Firstly, the setting is Magic!! On driving up – the countryside views and landscapes stretching for miles really creates a breath-taking feel that not many of the larger venues who can cater for numbers of 250+ can coffer. Living away from Ireland, the setting was so important for us as we wanted to feel like we were really at Home, surrounded by Green.

The House and Estate are pristinely kept and even though it has that beautiful Old Estate feel, the Lyrath offers superiorly modern amenities and décor and their 5 * customer service on all levels left anyone else we had dealt with in the blocks.”

Stacey & Diarmuid at Bridge House Hotel, Co. Offaly

“We chose the Bridge House Hotel as Diarmuid had a really good relationship with Danny Corbett and he use to do a few DJ sets for weddings/parties in the hotel. As I was from Kildare and Diarmuid was from Tipperary, Tullamore was the most central point for all families. I was also getting married in Edenderry church and I didn’t want people travelling over a half hour to the venue.

When we went for our first visit to the hotel I was blown away by the staircase and the homely feel of the venue. The food was amazing and the choices we were offered were outstanding for the price we paid. The package was excellent value for money and to this day people still comment on how fab the day was put in particular the food and hospitality, especially the dessert buffet.”

Sarah & Shane at Ballymagarvey Village, Co. Meath

We chose our venue, Ballymagarvey Village, because… When we arrived on the opening night the grounds were so beautiful and once we knocked on the front door they made us feel so welcome. As we walked around and viewed the main house and courtyard and banquet room we were overwhelmed with how beautifully decorated everywhere was it has the ultimate wow factor. It’s one thing having a stunning venue but the staff make it that much more special. Veronica our wedding coordinator was exceptional.

Was so helpful and friendly and we couldn’t have asked for someone so nice to help us with our wedding. As soon as I arrived the morning of the wedding Alan stopped me to tell me that I don’t need to worry about a thing and to enjoy my day as they had everything under control. We can’t recommend this venue enough anyone who is looking for the most romantic, beautiful setting and not having worry about a thing on their day. Ballymagarvey is that place.

Katie & Gerard at Glenlo Abbey Hotel & Estate, Co. Galway

“We had originally booked a church in Rome to get married there. One day we just decided to look into venues in Galway. The Glenlo Abbey was the first one that came to mind. I always thought it was a gorgeous hotel. We always said we wanted something a little different and we really liked how it was a bit outside the city. That weekend we decided to take a trip out to see it. We loved it from the get-go! It’s so classic and timeless. We loved the surroundings and the scenic view of the Corrib River. We also thought it was a very intimate hotel. Gerard and I met with Cathy the wedding coordinator and she showed us around and talked us through everything- so we booked it the following day!”

Michelle & Liam at Westport Woods Hotel, Mayo

“You just have to see it once, it is absolutely stunning. We had a Summer wedding and to have the grounds outside almost as part of the inside of your wedding reception is amazing. There was so much light with fantastic views to the forest with outdoor seating and lighting around the trees, the gazebos outside with beautiful outdoor fires, candles and giant bean bags it was just fab to look at.

We had a fairy light backdrop with a private bar and from the minute we set foot into this hotel we were met with a friendly service from the owner right through to the bar staff and to us that was a sign of really well ran hotel. We were also able to take pictures in a beautifully light area of the woods as the sun went down and to know that we were able to let the kids run around in the privacy of the grounds knowing they were safe was also a huge bonus. Liam and I are very thankful to have had Joanne, Caroline, Seamus and all the staff of the Westport Woods Hotel take such good care of us and not just on our wedding day but throughout the build up to it also.”

Thomas & Jessie at Wells House & Garden, Co. Wexford

“Initially we went out to Wells House & Gardens just to see if it was possible to do a wedding there, I knew Niamh and thought it might be nice. I had never actually been to Wells before the initial meeting with Niamh though and as soon as we started the drive up the long driveway and I spotted the house, I knew that no matter what I had to get married here. It was my dream venue without me consciously realising it until that moment. I cannot explain the magic that resides in Wells for me, it was absolutely perfect. We chose to do a small ceremony and meal in Wells for the day and then we invited loads of people to a big after party in The Talbot Hotel Wexford. We chose The Talbot because they were so helpful and their function room and bridal suite are beautiful. We had a few bands play, including Tom’s band that hadn’t played together in 7 years, and it was amazing to see them back together again.”

Paul & Aoife at The Johnstown Estate, Meath

“From the moment we stepped in the door it was perfect. Johnstown Estate know how to do a wedding! We love the old school luxury coupled with the modern style of Johnstown. The food is also amazing. Tamara and her team were so helpful and accommodating to us. The venue is also half way between our two homes and we will pass it every time we travel up and down to our parents so this will be very special for us.”

Leah & Joe at Cabra Castle, Co. Cavan

“Cabra Castle was the first and only place we viewed. It ticked all the boxes and it was free on the date we wanted. We got such a good feeling from the venue from the drive up to the castle, the function room, the whole castle and the grounds. The staff in particular Laura, Rose, Lorraine and Denise were so helpful and made sure the day ran without a single hitch.”

Maura & Douglas at Muckross Park Hotel & Spa, Kerry

“We chose our venue because of its location and reputation. It is located in Killarney National Park which is not far from Killarney town. Muckross Park Hotel has an excellent reputation as a luxury hotel, spa and wedding venue which was important as we had so many guests attending from overseas. Also, as we were organising everything from Australia we did not want to have any additional stress and we knew everything would be well organised by our wedding coordinator.”

Christine & James at Springfort Hall Hotel & Country House, Co. Cork

“It is the most stunning venue we had (and still have) seen. Originally we had decided we didn’t want to get married in Cork as we have been to so many weddings around the place that we wanted something different. We had decided on a venue in another county, and were due to put a deposit down after agreeing with the coordinator and off we went back to Cork happy that a decision was made. JP wasn’t fully convinced (not that I knew) so he stayed up late one night researching more venues and the following morning had booked a viewing of Springfort Hall for New Year’s Day. Reluctantly (from me) we went down and met with Marcella. The place was beautiful. It ticked boxes we didn’t even know we were looking for. Every room we walked into took my breath away but the final moment was the ball room. Even in broad daylight, after 4 weddings in a row, it was everything we were looking for. The decor and finishing touches make this hotel a cut above the rest.”

“Mount Falcon is a really great venue- the grounds are beautiful and the food, hospitality and accommodation are really excellent. We were ably looked after by Clodagh and Martina, who ensured everything ran smoothly on the day and we were able to sit back and relax. Our guests loved it, and we would not hesitate to recommend it to friends.” – Karina and Gerry

“We had an amazing wedding reception at Mount Falcon, everything was exactly how we wanted and any special requests we had were accommodated without any hassle. The entire team at Mount Falcon were always very helpful and professional and Alan was a pleasure to work with. We and our guests loved the Falconry display by Martin, it was a fantastic opportunity to appreciate the falcons, hawks and owls. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Mount Falcon to any of our friends and family.” – Patricia and Barry

“We recently attended a wedding at Mount Falcon. What a fantastic venue! The staff were very friendly & attentive to the guests at all times. The food was amazing – one of the best meals we’ve had at a wedding. Our bedroom was fabulous with a huge bathroom. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to try out the spa but we’ll definitely be back for a weekend stay.” – Cheryl

“Mount Falcon is a truly beautiful venue and it was perfect for our New Years Eve wedding reception. From the moment we stepped inside the door to view it as a possible wedding venue, the Christmas before our wedding, we knew immediately it would be perfect for the wedding we wanted to create – from the beautifully decorated Christmas trees, garlands and floral arrangements in the lobby and reception rooms, to the warm open fires, to the stunning grounds overlooking the lake – which was used as the backdrop to our fireworks display at midnight! The service was second to none. Our wedding coordinator was extremely helpful from the moment we met him and we were extremely impressed with his professionalism and that of all the staff members we dealt with on the lead up to and the day of our wedding. The wedding meal was really delicious and we received so much positive feedback on the food, wine and service from a number of our guests. The menu selection and quality of the food is excellent. Vegetables are sourced from the Mount Falcon gardens and suppliers are generally local. The wine list is extensive also. Mount Falcon is a very special place and for us there was nowhere else we would have considered for our wedding.” – Cora and Patrick
